THE PROBLEM
After the dusting of all the monuments of the chapel which has been made in march 2016, it remained to treat the presbytery area which includes:
the major altar with marble relief by Francesco Celebrano representing the Deposition, the monument to Alessandro de Sangro, the choir to the right of the altar, the two statues representing angels on either side of the altar made by Paolo Persico.
There have been included in this lot also the cornice stucco, murals on the ceiling by Francesco Maria Russo of the mid-eighteenth century, the paintings on the back wall of the altar, the halo with the glory of angels, a work in stucco realized by Paolo Persico.
THE METHOD
On all the surfaces has been applied the removal of particulate deposits, in addition to the consolidation and the grouting treatment.
Only on the cornice stucco, which had a very invasive repainting that hid the original finish, has been undertaken to a real cleaning.
The maintenance work lasted until early November.
In this period there have also been carried out targeted diagnostic investigationsin order to collect the knowledge of the materials and the execution techniques, in addition to the preservation history of the artifacts.
