PERIOD OF INTERVENTION:
2002/07/03 – 2003/08/08
THE PROBLEM
The facade is made up of numerous rock types: Apuan marble, ossolani middle grain of Val d’Ossola in different color shades, deep red tones of Simona Stone, the Stone of Oira, serpentinite green-blackish color, the Stone of Saltrio, in addition to Varenna stone and an unidentified “green stone” of alpine origin. Finally, into the blind window, there are precious polychrome recovery ancient marbles.
Considering the complexity of the intervention, the protection authority considered appropriate to start with a “pilot site” which has affected a part of the façade with the aim to proceed with the greatest awareness of the facts to verify the state of decay of the matter and the restoration of the stone.
THE PROBLEM
The intervention, preceded by a detailed graphic and photographic documentation phase, has been the subject of study and evaluation of researches conducted in the institutional area by the Superintendent and the Polytechnic of Milan, as well as improvement of the most suitable ways and tools for the solution of the problems associated with the conservation of the various rock types present.
The matured experiences have been a valuable material to drawing up a proper project and then extend the restoration to the entire façade.
